Start lesson 1

All ten lessons are ready. Start with lesson 1, and use the practice page after each lesson to check that the idea has sunk in.

Lessons

  1. What multiplication means

Equal groups and repeated addition, with factors and a product.

  2. Arrays and the commutative property

Rows and columns, and why the order does not change the answer.

  3. Times tables strategies

Doubles, near facts and the nines, without rote chanting.

  4. Multiplying by 10 and 100

Move the digits and watch the zeros grow.

  5. Multiply two-digit by one-digit

Split the number into tens and ones.

  6. What division means

Sharing equally and making equal groups.

  7. Division facts and fact families

Every times fact hides two division facts.

  8. Division with remainders

When the groups do not come out even.

  9. Word problems: choose the operation

    Decide between multiplying and dividing.

  10. Check with inverse operations

Use multiplication to check division, and the other way round.

What you will learn

The course starts with equal groups, arrays and the turn-around rule. Next come the times tables strategies, multiplying by 10 and 100, and multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number. The second half turns multiplication around: sharing and grouping, division facts and fact families, remainders, word problems and checking every answer with an inverse operation.

How to use the course

  1. Read one lesson. It takes about five minutes.
  2. Study the worked example and the diagrams.
  3. Answer the five "Try it" questions and check your answers.
  4. Open the practice page for ten more questions.
  5. Move to the next lesson when you feel steady.

There are 10 lessons and 10 practice pages, all free and without an account.
