Lesson 10 of 10 · Grades 3 to 4
Practice: Check with inverse operations
Check each multiplication with division and each division with multiplication. Ten questions follow, including two answers that turn out to be wrong.
How to use this page
This page gives you ten more questions on the same idea as the lesson "Check with inverse operations". Work through them at your own speed. Write your answer down or say it out loud before you open the answer box, so you give yourself a real chance to think.
If a question feels hard, go back to the lesson and look at the worked example again. Getting a question wrong is useful; it shows you the part that needs one more look.
Practice questions
Answer all ten questions in your notebook or in your head. Then open each answer to check your work.
-
Check 8 × 7 = 56 with a division.
Show answer
56 ÷ 8 = 7, so the product is correct.
-
Check 63 ÷ 9 = 7 with a multiplication.
Show answer
9 × 7 = 63, so the quotient is correct.
-
Is 6 × 9 = 54 correct? Check with 54 ÷ 6.
Show answer
54 ÷ 6 = 9, so yes, 6 × 9 = 54 is correct.
-
Check 96 ÷ 8 = 12 with a multiplication.
Show answer
8 × 12 = 96, so the quotient is correct.
-
Ben says that 45 ÷ 5 = 8. Use multiplication to check, then give the correct answer.
Show answer
5 × 8 = 40, not 45, so Ben is wrong. The correct answer is 45 ÷ 5 = 9.
-
Check 11 × 6 = 66 with a division.
Show answer
66 ÷ 6 = 11, so the product is correct.
-
Check 84 ÷ 7 = 12 with a multiplication.
Show answer
7 × 12 = 84, so the quotient is correct.
-
Hana works out 72 ÷ 8 = 9. Which multiplication checks her answer?
Show answer
8 × 9 = 72.
-
Is 13 × 4 = 52 correct? Check with a division.
Show answer
52 ÷ 4 = 13, so yes, 13 × 4 = 52 is correct.
-
A student writes 108 ÷ 9 = 11. Check with multiplication, then give the correct quotient.
Show answer
9 × 11 = 99, not 108, so 11 is wrong. Because 9 × 12 = 108, the correct quotient is 12.
