Lesson 5 of 10 · Grades 3 to 4

Multiply two-digit by one-digit

A two-digit number is a tens part and a ones part. To multiply it by a one-digit number, multiply each part on its own, then add the two answers. The split makes a hard multiplication into two easy ones.

Split the number

A two-digit number is two numbers wearing one coat. The number 36 is 30 plus 6. When you multiply 36 by 4, you can take the coat apart: multiply the 30 by 4, multiply the 6 by 4, and add the two answers. Both little multiplications use facts you already know.

This works because multiplication counts equal groups, and a group of 36 is a group of 30 sitting next to a group of 6. Four groups of 36 are the same as four groups of 30 plus four groups of 6. Nothing is lost in the split; you have only made the counting easier.

30 6 4 4 × 30 120 4 × 6 24 4 × 36 = 120 + 24 = 144
The area model of 4 × 36. The rectangle splits into 4 × 30 = 120 and 4 × 6 = 24. The two areas add to 144.

Two steps, one sum

Here is the method written as steps. First, split the two-digit number into its tens and ones. Next, multiply each part by the one-digit number. Finally, add the two products. For 4 × 36: split 36 into 30 and 6, work out 4 × 30 = 120 and 4 × 6 = 24, then add 120 + 24 = 144.

The two products are easy to hold in your head because one of them always ends in zero. The tens part gives a multiple of ten, and the ones part stays small. Adding them is the only real work.

Why the area model helps

The area model turns the calculation into a picture. Draw a rectangle whose width is the two-digit number and whose height is the one-digit number. Cut the rectangle into a tens part and a ones part. The area of each part is one of the little multiplications, and the area of the whole rectangle is the final answer.

The model also gives you a way to check whether an answer is sensible. A rectangle of 4 by 36 is a little smaller than a rectangle of 4 by 40, which has an area of 160. So an answer near 140 makes sense and an answer near 400 does not.

Useful tip

Say the two small facts out loud before you add them: "4 times 30 is 120, 4 times 6 is 24". Speaking the facts keeps the tens part from slipping down into the ones place, a common copying mistake when the same digit appears in both parts.

A short note about carrying

Some books teach a shorter written method that carries a digit from the ones place into the tens. That method is the same split-and-add idea, just written vertically. The split method explains why it works, so learn it first. When the split feels automatic, the shorter method becomes easy to read.

Worked example

Work out 4 × 36 by splitting 36 into tens and ones.

Step 1: split 36 into 30 and 6.

Step 2: multiply each part by 4. 4 × 30 = 120 and 4 × 6 = 24.

Step 3: add the two parts. 120 + 24 = 144.

Step 4: check that the answer is reasonable. 4 × 36 is about 4 × 40 = 160, and 144 is a little less, which fits.

Answer: 144.

Remember

  • Split the two-digit number into tens and ones.
  • Multiply both parts by the one-digit number.
  • Add the two products together.
  • Estimate with a round number to check the answer.

Try it

Answer the five questions below. Work them out first, then open each answer to check.

  1. Split 4 × 21 into a tens part and a ones part, then solve it.

    Show answer

    4 × 20 = 80 and 4 × 1 = 4, so 4 × 21 = 84.

  2. What is 5 × 32?

    Show answer

    160. 5 × 30 = 150 and 5 × 2 = 10, so 150 + 10 = 160.

  3. What is 3 × 24?

    Show answer

    72. 3 × 20 = 60 and 3 × 4 = 12, so 60 + 12 = 72.

  4. What is 6 × 14?

    Show answer

    84. 6 × 10 = 60 and 6 × 4 = 24, so 60 + 24 = 84.

  5. A train carriage seats 48 people. How many people can sit in 2 carriages?

    Show answer

    96 people. 2 × 40 = 80 and 2 × 8 = 16, so 80 + 16 = 96.

The rectangle shows 6 × 23 cut into a tens part and a ones part. The narrow part has an area of 18 and the wide part has an area of 120. What is 6 × 23?

Pick your answer

Show a hint

The two areas are the two parts of the multiplication. Add them together.

Show the answer

Answer: 138. 6 × 23 = 6 × 20 + 6 × 3 = 120 + 18 = 138. The answer 128 loses the ten from the ones part.
