Lesson 8 of 10 · Grades 3 to 4

Practice: Division with remainders

Divide, write the remainder, and decide what it means in a story. Ten questions follow. Remember that the remainder must always be smaller than the number you divide by.

How to use this page

This page gives you ten more questions on the same idea as the lesson "Division with remainders". Work through them at your own speed. Write your answer down or say it out loud before you open the answer box, so you give yourself a real chance to think.

If a question feels hard, go back to the lesson and look at the worked example again. Getting a question wrong is useful; it shows you the part that needs one more look.

Practice questions

Answer all ten questions in your notebook or in your head. Then open each answer to check your work.

  1. What is 19 ÷ 4?

    Show answer

4 remainder 3. Four groups of 4 make 16, and 3 are left over.

  2. What is 23 ÷ 5?

    4 remainder 3.

  3. What is 31 ÷ 8?

    3 remainder 7.

  4. What is 50 ÷ 7?

    Show answer

    7 remainder 1.

  5. What is 38 ÷ 9?

    Show answer

    4 remainder 2.

  6. A troop has 44 biscuits, shared equally among 6 hikers. How many biscuits does each hiker get, and how many are left?

    Show answer

    7 biscuits each, with 2 left over. 44 ÷ 6 = 7 remainder 2.

  7. 26 eggs are packed into boxes of 4. How many boxes are filled, and how many eggs are left?

    Show answer

    6 boxes are filled, with 2 eggs left over. 26 ÷ 4 = 6 remainder 2.

  8. A student says that 30 ÷ 4 = 6 remainder 6. What is wrong with the remainder?

    Show answer

The remainder 6 is not smaller than the divisor 4, so another group can still be made. The correct answer is 7 remainder 2.

  9. What is the remainder when 100 is divided by 9?

    Show answer

    1. 9 × 11 = 99, and 100 - 99 = 1.

  10. A bus holds 30 children. 95 children are going on a trip. How many buses are needed?

    Show answer

4 buses. Three buses carry 90 children, and the last 5 children still need a bus.
