  1. What is a fraction?

    Halves, thirds and quarters, made from equal parts.

  2. Fractions on a number line

    Place a fraction between 0 and 1.

  3. Equivalent fractions

    Different fractions can name the same amount.

  4. Compare fractions

    Use the numerator or the denominator to compare.

  5. Add fractions with the same denominator

    Add the parts and keep the denominator.

  6. Subtract fractions with the same denominator

    Take the parts away and keep the denominator.

  7. Fractions of a whole number

    Find one third of 12, and more.

  8. Mixed numbers and improper fractions

    Change between 2 1/2 and 5/2.

  9. Multiply a fraction by a whole number

    Work out 3 x 2/5 with a picture and with numbers.

  10. Fractions in real life

    Use fractions with recipes, time and money.

What you will learn

The course starts by naming equal parts and placing fractions on a number line. Next you build equivalent fractions, compare them, and add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. The last lessons move to fractions of whole numbers, mixed numbers, multiplying a fraction by a whole number and everyday problems with time, money and recipes.

How to use the course

  1. Read one lesson. It takes about five minutes.
  2. Study the worked example and the diagrams.
  3. Answer the five "Try it" questions and check your answers.
  4. Open the practice page for ten more questions.
  5. Move to the next lesson when you feel steady.
