Lesson 3 of 8 · Grades 3 to 5

Mass and weight

Mass tells you how much matter an object has, and weight is the pull of gravity on that matter. For everyday measuring, people use grams and kilograms, or ounces and pounds. This lesson covers both systems.

Mass or weight?

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Weight is the pull of gravity on that matter. In a science lesson the two are different, but in the kitchen and the shop people use the word weight for both. When a recipe says 500 g of flour, it means the mass, and the scale in the kitchen measures exactly that.

A balance scale compares two pans. When the beam stays level, the two pans hold the same mass. Adding an object to one side makes that side sink and the other side rise. The picture shows a level scale: the kilogram on the left balances the gram weights on the right, because the two sides hold the same mass.

1 kg 1,000 g
A level balance scale: one kilogram on the left pan balances 1,000 grams on the right pan, because both sides have the same mass.

Grams and kilograms

The metric units for mass are the gram (g) and the kilogram (kg). One kilogram is 1,000 grams. A paperclip has a mass of about 1 g, a slice of bread about 30 g, an apple about 200 g, and a bag of flour about 1 kg. Grams suit small, light things, and kilograms suit bags, boxes and people. A school bag might have a mass of 5 kg, and a bicycle about 12 kg.

1 kg = 1,000 g 1 lb = 16 oz
The two mass facts you need most: a kilogram holds 1,000 grams, and a pound holds 16 ounces.

Ounces and pounds

The customary units for weight are the ounce (oz) and the pound (lb). One pound is 16 ounces. A slice of bread weighs about 1 oz, a loaf about 1 lb, and a bag of apples about 3 lb. A parcel at the post office might weigh 40 oz, which is 2 lb 8 oz, because 40 = 32 + 8 and 32 oz is 2 lb.

The two systems do not convert with a neat fact. One kilogram is about 2.2 pounds, and one pound is about 454 grams. For everyday work you only need the facts inside each system: 1,000 grams in a kilogram, and 16 ounces in a pound. Change between systems only when a question asks for it, and use the word about.

Comparing masses

To compare two masses, write both in the same unit. Which is heavier, 700 g or 2 kg? Change the kilograms to grams: 2 kg is 2,000 g. Now the comparison is easy, because 2,000 is more than 700, so 2 kg is heavier. The same method works for a mass like 2,800 g against 3 kg: 3 kg is 3,000 g, so 2,800 g is lighter.

A number written in two units is a sum. A puppy with a mass of 3 kg 500 g has a mass of 3,000 g + 500 g = 3,500 g. Going the other way, 2,500 g is 2 kg 500 g, because the first 2,000 g make 2 kg and 500 g is left over.

Watch out for this

Do not turn 2 kg 500 g into 2.5 g or 2 kg 5 g. The 500 g is half of a kilogram, so the mass is 2,500 g, not 205 g. The grams part of a mass can hold up to 999 g before it becomes another kilogram.

Worked example

A suitcase has a mass of 7 kg 250 g. Write the mass in grams, then compare it with a 7,500 g bag.

Step 1: change the kilograms to grams. 1 kg = 1,000 g, so 7 kg = 7,000 g.

Step 2: add the grams. 7,000 g + 250 g = 7,250 g.

Step 3: compare with the bag. Write the bag as 7,500 g and the suitcase as 7,250 g.

Step 4: since 7,250 is less than 7,500, the suitcase is lighter than the bag.

Answer: 7,250 g, so the suitcase is lighter than the 7,500 g bag.

Remember

  • One kilogram is 1,000 grams.
  • One pound is 16 ounces.
  • Write the two masses in the same unit before you compare them.
  • A mass in two units is a sum: 3 kg 500 g is 3,500 g.

Try it

Answer the five questions below. Work them out first, then open each answer to check.

  1. How many grams are in one kilogram?

    Show answer

1,000 grams. One kilogram is a thousand grams.

  2. How many ounces are in one pound?

    Show answer

16 ounces. One pound holds sixteen ounces.

  3. A bag of sugar has a mass of 2 kg. How many grams is that?

    Show answer

    2,000 grams. 2 × 1,000 = 2,000 g.

  4. Which is heavier, 500 g or 1 kg?

    Show answer

    1 kg. It is 1,000 g, which is heavier than 500 g.

  5. A puppy has a mass of 3 kg 500 g. How many grams is that?

    Show answer

    3,500 grams. 3 kg is 3,000 g, and 3,000 + 500 = 3,500 g.

Puzzle time

A balance scale is level. The left pan holds 3 identical bags of rice. The right pan holds a 6 kg weight. What is the mass of one bag of rice?

Pick your answer

Show a hint

Three equal bags balance 6 kg, so share the 6 kg equally among the 3 bags: 6 ÷ 3.

Show the answer

Answer: 2 kg. If 3 equal bags balance 6 kg, then one bag has a mass of 6 ÷ 3 = 2 kg.
