Lesson 7 of 8 · Grades 4 to 5

Adding and subtracting decimals

Decimals are easy to add and subtract once the place values line up. The decimal point is the marker: put the points in one column and the tenths sit under the tenths. Extra zeros keep the columns even, and they do not change the numbers.

Line up the decimal points

Adding decimals is like adding whole numbers, with one extra job at the start: line up the decimal points. When the points sit in one column, the tenths sit under the tenths, the hundredths under the hundredths, and every digit is added to a digit of the same place value.

Take 3.5 + 1.25. The first number has one decimal place and the second has two, so write 3.5 as 3.50. The value has not changed, and now both numbers have hundredths. The chart below shows the two addends with the points lined up, and the sum underneath.

1s 0.1s 0.01s 3 5 0 + 1 2 5 = 4 7 5
3.50 + 1.25. With the points lined up, the hundredths column adds 0 + 5, the tenths column adds 5 + 2, and the ones column adds 3 + 1. The sum is 4.75.

Add from the right

Add the columns from right to left, exactly as you do with whole numbers. Start with the hundredths, then the tenths, then the ones. If a column reaches ten or more, carry one into the next column on the left. In the example above no column reaches ten, so the sum is simply 4.75.

An example with a carry: 2.7 + 4.68 becomes 2.70 + 4.68. The hundredths add to 8, the tenths add to 13, so write 3 tenths and carry 1 whole. The ones add to 2 + 4 + 1 = 7. The sum is 7.38.

Subtract with padding zeros

Subtraction uses the same setup. Line up the points, pad the shorter number with zeros, and work from the right. The calculation 5.2 - 0.85 becomes 5.20 - 0.85. There are no hundredths to take 5 from, so borrow from the tenths: 20 hundredths take away 5 hundredths leaves 15 hundredths. The tenths column becomes 1, and 1 tenth take away 8 tenths needs another borrow from the ones, leaving 3 tenths. The ones become 4, and 4 take away 0 is 4.

1s 0.1s 0.01s 5 2 0 - 0 8 5 = 4 3 5
5.20 - 0.85 with the points lined up. Borrowing gives 15 hundredths and 3 tenths, so the difference is 4.35.

Estimate to check

A quick estimate catches most mistakes. The sum 3.5 + 1.25 is close to 3.5 + 1, which is 4.5, and the exact answer 4.75 is nearby. The difference 5.2 - 0.85 is close to 5 - 1, which is 4, and the exact answer 4.35 is nearby. If your estimate and your answer are far apart, check that the points were lined up.

Watch out for this

Digits from different places must never be added together. Writing 3.5 + 1.25 without lining up the points could put the 5 tenths under the 5 hundredths and give a wrong answer. The decimal point is the anchor of the whole calculation: it marks where the tenths column starts.

Worked example

A piece of wood is 6.4 m long. A piece 2.75 m long is cut off. How much wood is left?

Step 1: write the numbers with the same number of decimal places: 6.40 m and 2.75 m.

Step 2: line up the decimal points, so hundredths sit under hundredths and tenths under tenths.

Step 3: subtract from the right: 0 hundredths take away 5 hundredths needs a borrow, which gives 5 hundredths. Then 3 tenths take away 7 tenths needs a borrow, which gives 6 tenths. Then 5 ones take away 2 ones gives 3 ones.

Step 4: estimate to check: 6.4 - 2.75 is close to 6 - 3 = 3, and the answer 3.65 is close to 3.

Answer: 3.65 m.

Remember

  • Write the numbers with their decimal points in one column.
  • Pad the shorter number with zeros so the places match.
  • Add or subtract from the right, carrying or borrowing as needed.
  • Estimate first, then check your answer against the estimate.

Try it

Answer the five questions below. Work them out first, then open each answer to check.

  1. 3.4 + 2.5 = ?

    Show answer

5.9. The tenths add to 9 tenths, and the ones add to 5.

  2. 7.2 + 1.45 = ?

    Show answer

    8.65. Write 7.2 as 7.20, then add 7.20 + 1.45 place by place.

  3. 5.6 - 2.3 = ?

    Show answer

3.3. Subtract the tenths and then the ones.

  4. 4.5 - 1.75 = ?

    Show answer

2.75. Write 4.5 as 4.50 and subtract 1.75 from it.

  5. A rope is 3.8 m long and another is 2.45 m long. What is the total length?

    Show answer

    6.25 m. 3.80 m + 2.45 m = 6.25 m.

This vertical sum shows 3.70 + 1.?8 = 5.48, with one hidden digit. Which digit is missing?

Pick your answer

Show a hint

Subtract 3.70 from 5.48 first, then read the hidden digit.

Show the answer

Answer: 7. 5.48 - 3.70 = 1.78, so the hidden digit in the tenths place is 7.
