Lesson 6 of 8 · Grades 3 to 6

Practice: Volume by counting cubes

Ten questions on counting volume: unit cubes, layers, cubic units and comparing the space inside two boxes.

How to use this page

This page gives you ten more questions on the same idea as the lesson "Volume by counting cubes". Work through them at your own speed. Write your answer down or say it out loud before you open the answer box, so you give yourself a real chance to think.

If a question feels hard, go back to the lesson and look at the worked example again. Getting a question wrong is useful; it shows you the part that needs one more look.

Practice questions

Answer all ten questions in your notebook or in your head. Then open each answer to check your work.

  1. A box is 6 cubes long, 3 cubes wide and 1 cube tall. How many unit cubes fill it?

    Show answer

    18 unit cubes. 6 × 3 = 18.

  2. A layer holds 12 cubes. The box is 4 layers tall. How many cubes fill it?

    Show answer

    48 cubes. 4 × 12 = 48.

  3. A box is 5 cm by 4 cm by 2 cm built from 1 cm cubes. How many cubes fill it?

    Show answer

    40 cubes. 5 × 4 × 2 = 40.

  4. A cube is 4 cm on every edge. How many 1 cm cubes fill it?

    Show answer

    64 cubes. 4 × 4 × 4 = 64.

  5. A box is 7 cubes long, 2 cubes wide and 3 cubes tall. How many unit cubes fill it?

    Show answer

    42 unit cubes. 7 × 2 = 14 in a layer, and 14 × 3 = 42.

  6. A box is 10 cm by 5 cm by 3 cm built from 1 cm cubes. How many cubes fill it?

    Show answer

    150 cubes. 10 × 5 × 3 = 150.

  7. A box holds 30 unit cubes in 2 layers. How many cubes are in each layer?

    Show answer

    15 cubes. 30 ÷ 2 = 15.

  8. Which holds more cubes: a box 4 cubes long by 4 wide by 2 tall, or a cube 3 cubes on every edge?

    Show answer

The 4 by 4 by 2 box. It holds 32 cubes, and the cube holds 27.

  9. A box is 8 cubes long, 5 cubes wide and 2 cubes tall. How many unit cubes fill it?

    Show answer

    80 unit cubes. 8 × 5 = 40 in a layer, and 40 × 2 = 80.

  10. A solid is built from 6 layers of 9 cubes. How many cubes are in the solid?

    Show answer

    54 cubes. 6 × 9 = 54.
